Guest Comment

‘Outstanding menu and dinners, with some of the greatest wines imaginable, plus warm and friendly service. We now recommend this hotel to our friends.’ – Schmidt family, Frankfurt

‘We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in St James, close to the city but right at the seaside. The hotel and our suites were very special. Now, if only Holland will win!’ – Van Linkup, Amsterdam

‘Our week at Rodwell House was exceptional. The combination of warm service, beautiful décor, and tranquil gardens was the perfect foil to soccer crowds… a haven to return to after a day out and about. Better still was the shipment of fine wines they organised to be couriered back home!’ – Hawthorns, Manchester

Guest activity

June has been vuvuzela month, noisy and celebratory. Then Bafana Banana set a new world record, crashing out in the first round. (We South Africans are always keen to set new world records, whatever the cost.) Noise and celebrations however continue.

Rodwell Rocks ‘Winter Series’ in the bistro

Our Wine Maker Dinners feature award-winning vineyards every second Friday and they have become a hit!

Fun, informative and offering outstanding value, these events informally approach wine tasting and food pairing under the expert eye of the wine maker, who dines with the group. We help tease out the details with an added twist of fun...

This Friday will see Cape Point Vineyards with Duncan Savage – fully booked

Friday 16th July with Lars Maack and Buitenverwachting wines – a few seats still available

Friday 30th July with Cathy Marshall and her own gorgeous wines, some availability

International wines on our award-winning list

Domaine Fourrier, Chambolle-Musigny 2002, Burgundy FRANCE
Complex yet understated, and now in gorgeous harmony. Sweet perfume of ripe fruits and hints of pine forest floor, gentle tannins mixed with heady black stone fruit, refreshing and clean mineral and ripe plum finish to the wine. This is as elegant and subtle as pinot noir from Chambolle gets.

SA wines on our award-winning list

Le Bonheur Prima 1999, Stellenbosch. The fruit composition is simply outstanding. The overall balance is in absolute synch and it offers thorough enjoyment from the first sip. Drinking superbly right now, this should shine through to 2020.

A new artist that we now feature is Mpumelelo Dube (1982 - )

Using acrylics and oils, Dube specializes in painting urban and rural scenes. At an early point in his career, Dube mastered the ability to capture brief moments, as his subjects go about their daily routines. He does not paint facial features, choosing to focus the viewer on the larger composition. Dube shows keen talent and promise for an exciting future.

Collecting art and furniture - do I have to stick to antiques?

The definition of “antique” varies depending on the item. For furniture the requirement is that the piece was made over 100 years ago. However many highly collectable items, for example Moorcroft or Clarice Cliff, only date back to the ’30s. Many of South Africa’s collectable art was produced during the period 1950 – 1980. For any period, the important issue is originality and authenticity – if a table is from the 1930s then its design, colour, patina, originality and provenance/maker are the most important aspects to consider. Repairs and over-restoration can significantly reduce value.

World cup dilemma…

With SA and the Brits, plus others, now knocked out, whom to back? With glass in one hand, vuvuzela in
the other, does it matter? May the best team win!

P.S. SA and UK slightly used car flags for sale, one each. What offers?

All the best from Robin, Ivan, Joanne and the Rodwell House team
